Marine/Offshore High Salt & Water? Corrosion-Resistant Oil Filter Elements Design
October 31, 2023
Marine engines and deck hydraulics face salt mist and humidity. Oil absorbs water, emulsifies, and housings corrode. Customers report rusty perforation, swollen media with flow loss, and milky oil foam.
Select elements by housing + media + sealing. Use 316/316L stainless or nickel-plated steel housings with anti-corrosion weld coatings. For media, choose PTFE-laminated glass fiber or hydrophobic synthetic fibers to resist hydrolysis and mold. Seals should be FKM or marine-grade NBR, preventing micro-leaks that inhale moist air.
Install oil-water separators to keep water content below 0.05%. If water/salt rises in oil tests, replace early rather than waiting for ΔP, to avoid bypass opening and unfiltered return flow.
